Second day in Vienna: Artificial Intelligence Congress 2018

DAY 2: Algorithms & Bots

Day 2 on 5th of December 2018 at We Are Developers AI congress in Vienna was all about bots and algorithms. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve seen the most amazing people and very cool use cases and concepts. The last two talks I went to see were: Deep Learning for Recommender Systems by speaker Alexandros Karatzoglou – Scientific Director in Telefonica and AI and Advanced Analytics applied at Raiffeisen Bank International AG by speakers Ľubomír Karlík – AI Transformation and Georg Köldorfer – Head of Advanced Analytics Consulting at Raifeisen Bank.

Deep Learning for Recommender Systems – Alexandros Karatzoglou

Deep Learning systems are one of the most popular machine learning methods in AI and commercially very popular systems. Recommender Systems are often used for multimedia content (especially online) for different recommendations – like for example music recommendations, film recommendations or online store recommendations. Alexandros presented few interesting methods (session based recommendations, DEEPCF etc.), algorithms (word2vec, GRU4Vec, etc.) and use cases of recommender systems. This systems in commercial use are very interesting because they are developed based on the data of users, data is totally anonymized (GDPR era of IT).

For example you have film selections library based on the films you have watched. Mr. Karatzoglou presented used case for Recommender systems used for Film recommendations. This method can be used for online browsing and can be based on the session you are having (so it’s session based), then your recommendations can be based on one genre of your most watched films – for example the one with the most views can be used to link with other films other users have watched or linked to top-list of films from the genre. Or even you can base recommendation if you create so-called group of films (with the same genre) and you take on film away from group – you get the whole new list of different recommendations. Or you can base recommendations and create links between least watched and most watched films. You have variety of algorithms to play around. Same goes for online stores. I really liked this talk, because it included graphical diagrams and vectors. People are visual types and it’s all about visual presentation of complexity.

AI and Advanced Analytics applied at Raifeisen Bank International AG – Lubomir Karlik and Georg Köldorfer

Banking and information technology science walk together hand in hand. It’s a worldwide and very very regulated business. When it comes to implementing and developing new technology banking sector uses the most waterproof solutions and modern technology. I was really excited about presentation by Lubomir and Georg. This two guys showed great confidence and focus on stage.

They presented prototype of virtual call center agent – with a twist. The bot was programmed for conversation with costumers (I think in Czech language) to provide information about foreign currency for trading purposes. The idea of BOT is to use beautiful Slavic language specifically for CEE region, because costumers are mainly from this area where Slavic languages are spoken. Which I think it’s great. The platform is based on open source solution, Lubomir also shared interesting statement that AI is about injecting the human gene inside technology.

Overall as you can see artificial intelligence is already used in business in many different sectors and I think if technology is here we should use it, develop it, play around with it. Let technology live in our every day lives to have better work results, more fun and excitement.
